Health systems around the globe are investing heavily into and getting much better at predicting health risks using ever more promising screening methods including liquid biopsies, genome sequencing, and other groundbreaking technologies. However, we are investing far less to better understand how to convert many of these valuable insights into effective lifestyle & behaviour modification and ultimately, into proportionally improved health outcomes.
For example, we treat the obesity and diabetes type II epidemic with brilliant new medications that help control appetite for as long as these drugs are prescribed. However, we’re not investing equivalent amounts into understanding and effectively addressing the root causes. We observe increasing cancer incidence in younger segments of the population than in previous decades, so we invest more energy & funding into enhancing our arsenal of therapies rather than into unravelling the reasons for this development. We deal with declining human fertility by investing disproportionately into assisted reproduction techniques rather than into uncovering the drivers of this worrying trend.
